IPL Q & A

What is IPL?

IPL stands for intense pulsed light. It’s similar to laser therapy but differs in how light is directed toward your skin. Laser therapy uses just one wavelength of light, but IPL delivers bursts of multiple wavelengths. The process is similar to a photo flash, which is why it’s often referred to as a photofacial or photo treatment.

That scattered light is able to penetrate into the dermal layer of your skin without harming the epidermal, or outer layer. The pigment in your skin absorbs the light and converts it into heat. The heat breaks apart targeted pigment, which eventually rises to the surface of your skin and flakes away.

What Can IPL Treat?

IPL treatment can address several problems related to discoloration, including:

  • Sun damage

  • Age spots

  • Birthmarks

  • Spider veins

  • Freckles

  • Melasma

  • Rosacea

While IPL is most commonly used to treat facial skin, treatment is also effective on your neck, arms, back, chest, legs, and even your bikini line.

What should I expect during and after IPL sessions?

During your initial consultation, your practitioner will estimate how many treatments you’ll need to reach your aesthetic goals. Your sessions begin with cleansing the area and applying a thin layer of gel. Both of you will wear protective glasses during the light therapy process.

Next, the practitioner moves the treatment handpiece over your skin as the light pulses.

You may feel a stinging sensation during treatment, similar to the snap of a rubber band. The entire process usually takes less than 30 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area.

  • After your appointment, your skin may feel more sensitive than normal and might also be a bit red or swollen. It should return to normal within a couple of days as your skin heals. Avoid using harsh products or hot water on your skin for a few days, and be sure to wear a high-quality sunscreen.
