Q & A

What causes stretch marks?

Stretch marks are long, thin lines on your skin. They’re usually a darker or lighter color than the rest of your skin, and also have a different texture. You can even feel the difference if you run your fingers over stretch marks.

These marks occur when your skin is placed under significant strain in a short period of time. Pregnancy is perhaps the most common cause, but many men and women also develop stretch marks after significant weight gain. Even puberty can cause these lines to pop up, seemingly overnight.

Another cause of stretch marks is excess cortisone, a hormone produced by your adrenal glands. Certain disorders can increase your cortisone levels. Corticosteroid creams and pills can also lead to stretch marks because they impede your skin’s elasticity.

Why do stretch marks appear?

Stretch marks can occur anywhere on your body, but they are most commonly found on your:

  • Stomach

  • Upper arms

  • Buttocks

  • Thighs

  • Breasts

Women are more likely to develop stretch marks than men, and Caucasian people have higher rates than those with darker skin tones.

What can be done to treat stretch marks?

There are numerous topical treatments marketed as stretch mark cures, but most do little to change the appearance of stretch marks. Microdermabrasion can be effective and works by manually abrading the outer layers of skin to reveal a fresh layer of skin cells.

Laser stretch mark removal is the most effective way to reduce the appearance of stretch marks. The process uses concentrated beams of light to stimulate new cell growth in the skin surrounding existing stretch marks.

When that light energy damages targeted cells, your body responds by creating new cells, including collagen. That smooths and plumps your skin, lessening the textural difference of your stretch marks and providing a more uniform appearance.

You may experience slight reddening or swelling of the skin following treatment, but this should go away fairly quickly. You can return to your normal activities after your appointment.
